TIOBE Programming Community Index 2010 has been published, some interesting changes in June are, Java is back at number 1, Objective-C is still rising, and Google’s Go falls out of top 20. If you read the Tiobe Programming Community Index 2008, you should know ActionScript entered the index’s top twenty on that time, it’s number 22 now.

This index is NOT about the best programming language or the language in which most lines of code have been written.

The name of the programming language does not matter as long as you are in top 20% of developers in this language. Did you see any the best Cobol programmers have problems finding jobs?

But on the other hand, The TIOBE Programming Community index is an indication of the popularity of programming languages. The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers world-wide, courses and third party vendors. So the programmers can check whether their programming skills are still up to date with this index or make the what-to-learn-next decision.

However, I think which programming language we should learn shouldn’t be decided by the TIOBE Programming Community index—it’s updated monthly.  Only learn what you need, and you must know: You are one of the pacing factor to decide which one will be up/down in this index. Yes, YOU, all programmers.
